EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern completes the first day of play at the Olympia Fields Invitational and Milwaukee Tennis Classic (MTC) with a combined 6-6 record in singles and doubles. Singles play resumes Saturday at Olympia Fields for Joshua Graves and Tobias Reitz as the rest of the team faces Wisconsin in doubles and Ball State in singles at the MTC.
At the MTC on Friday, Northwestern started the tournament by facing Big Ten rival Wisconsin in singles play. The `Cats and Badgers split the six matches, with Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) and Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) showing their experience with straight set victories over Patrick Pohlmann and Michael Dierberger, respectively.
Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) posted a 3-6, 6-3 (10-2) victory over the Badgers' Luke Rassow-Kantor. Freshmen Wildcats Sidarth Balaji (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax), Chris Jackman (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Spencer Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla./Laurel Springs) failed to win their first collegiate matches and look to notch victories over Ball State players Saturday.
The `Cats continued with doubles play against tournament host Marquette, posting victories in all three matches for the first doubles wins of Balaji, Wolf and Jackman's Northwestern careers.
At the Olympia Fields Invitational, Graves and Reitz fell, 8-3, to Florida State's Jean-Yves Aubone and Vahid Mirzadeh, who finished 2009 ranked 23rd in the nation. In singles, Reitz dropped his match to Notre Dame's Tyler Davis in straight sets. The last match on the court, Graves lost 7-6(6), 6-3 to Miami's Christian Blocker.
Play at both tournaments resumes Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
