Northwestern Drops Match at Saint Louis, 3-0

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Jennifer Baumann (Waukesha, Wisc./Catholic Memorial), Sam Greene (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) and Alicia Herczeg (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) each registered a shot but Northwestern came up empty Sunday, falling 3-0 at Saint Louis.
Andrea Barklage opened the scoring for the hosts with an early goal. Susan Frederickson took a run down the far side and played Kelly Waeckerle into the box where the senior crossed to Barklage. Her shot from the left side of the penalty box beat Northwestern goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) to her right to put the Billikens on the board at the 7:42 mark.
The 'Cats' best chance of the half came minutes later off a direct kick from freshman Briana Westlund (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park). From inside the center circle Westlund put the kick into the middle of a scrum in front of the net but Saint Louis keeper Hannah Perry was able to punch the ball out of harm's way before NU could register a shot.
Three minutes later, Baumann missed the net just high with a header off a corner kick served by Greene.
Northwestern (0-3-1) controlled the pace early in the second half, with Herczeg missing just wide of the net on a shot from 18 yards out. However, Saint Louis (1-1-0) struck again at the 55:34 mark. Waeckerle crossed to Frederickson, who slipped behind the Northwestern backline and beat Edwards on a 1-on-1 opportunity from 12 yards to give the Billikens a 2-0 lead.
Waeckerle added a goal seven minutes later to create the final margin.
NU returns home to Lakeside Field for its next match, Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. against Loyola Chicago. Admission and parking is free for all women's soccer regular season home games.
