Northwestern Announces 2009 Team Captains

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald announced today that seniors Mike Kafka (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita), Sherrick McManis (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods), Brendan Smith (Andover, Mass./New Hampton Prep (N.H.)) and Corey Wootton (Rutherford, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) will serve as the team's 2009 captains.

Smith is a team captain for a second consecutive year, making him just the eighth player in Northwestern's 122-year history to serve in that capacity for two different seasons. The last Northwestern player to earn that honor was linebacker Barry Gardner in 1997 and 1998.

"We have a team full of leaders, but these four players have earned the ultimate honor, being selected as captains by their teammates," said Fitzgerald.
