Wildcats Drop Exhibition to Huskies, 1-0

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern registered six shots but couldn't find the back of the net, falling 1-0 to Northern Illinois in a women's soccer exhibition match Monday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
All six of NU's shots came in the second half, which was played with torrential rains and fog. Sophomore Jill Dunn (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) was the only player on either side to record two shots in the game.
Northern Illinois broke a scoreless tie in the 81st minute by recording an own goal. Kaitlin Bujak sent a cross from the left touch line into the penalty box, where it glanced off the side of a Wildcat defender and into the net. Northwestern had opportunities to score an equalizer but was unable to register a shot off its 11 corner kicks.
Junior Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) and sophomore Grace Weitz (Golden Valley, Minn./The Breck School) split time at goalkeeper for NU. Neither recorded a save as the 'Cats backline limited Northern Illinois to just three shots in the game and none on target.
"Today was a good opportunity for us to see our team on the field and get ready for the season opener," said Northwestern Head Coach Stephanie Erickson. "We got a chance to try out a lot of different line-up combinations and substitution patterns to see what arrangements will yield the best results."
Senior Alicia Herczeg (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) and juniors Colleen Antas (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North), Jennifer Baumann (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and Sam Greene (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) each recorded a shot for NU.
Northwestern opens its 2009 regular season Friday night against Milwaukee. The 7 pm match features free attendance and parking at Lakeside Field.
