EVANSTON, Ill. -- After two of the most successful seasons in their respective program histories, Northwestern's men's and women's tennis teams already have plenty to look forward to in the 2009-10 campaign. According to TennisRecruiting.net, Claire Pollard has assembled the second-ranked incoming class in the nation while Arvid Swan's four-member recruiting class is ranked eighth in the country.
On the women's side, Pollard was able to find a trio of talented freshmen who will try to fill the shoes of departing NU seniors Georgia Rose, Nazlie Ghazal and Keri Robison. Newcomers Linda Abu Mushraf (Florida), Kate Turvy (Ohio) and Brittany Wowchuk (Canada) each have an opportunity to make immediate contributions to a Northwestern team that finished 28-2 and drew the top overall seed in the 2009 NCAA Championships.
“We feel very confident about the freshman class we managed to recruit,” Pollard said. “Your ability to be successful year-in and year-out relies on your ability to recruit the right type of players. Linda, Kate and Brittany are all extremely talented and we're already looking forward to their arrival on campus and on the tennis courts.”
Swan's deep recruiting class includes three players from the fertile recruiting grounds of Florida—Christopher Jackman, Mark Schanerman and Spencer Wolf—as well as Sidarth Balaji of Virginia. They'll be looking to build on the momentum that Northwestern developed in going 18-9 in dual matches and earning a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2009.
“We are very excited about the signing of Mark, Spencer, Sidarth and Chris,” Swan said. “As a group they are talented, hard working and very competitive. I recruited all four players not only because of their junior accomplishments, which are significant, but also because of their significant potential and work ethic.”
