UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Freshman Eric Chun (Ansung City, South Korea/International Christian School) was the lone competitor to finish below par at the 2009 Big Ten Championships, capturing the individual title with a 72-hole total of 1-under 283 (70-68-71-74).
Chun made 15 pars and three bogies Sunday to fire a 3-over 74, holding off 28th-ranked Kevin Foley of Penn State by one stroke. Foley started his day on the back nine and played the front in 1-under. Chun is the first freshman to win Big Ten medalist honors since PGA TOUR veteran Steve Stricker of Illinois did so in 1986.
In the last 10 years, NU has won eight team and individual Big Ten championships. Chun is the ninth different Wildcat to win the individual Big Ten title, and his crown is the 11th in school history. Both Sid Richardson (1937-38) and Luke Donald (2000-01) won the conference title twice.
The tournament victory is the first of Chun's career; he entered today with four top-20 finishes on the season and a previous high of sixth in Northwestern's victory at the 13-team Kepler Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio State.
As a team, Northwestern finished seventh overall with a 72-hole total of 41-over 1,177 (290-296-287-304). NU was five strokes behind sixth-place Iowa and two strokes in front of both Purdue and No. 42 Michigan. No. 15 Illinois won the team championship with a 13-over 1,149.
Junior Jonathan Bowers (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson) finished 28th for Northwestern at 13-over 297 (73-74-73-77). Both Josh Dupont (Poway, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) (73-78-72-77) and David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) (76-76-71-77) tied for 38th position at 16-over 300. All three of those Wildcats finished the tournament with rounds of 6-over 77 on Sunday.
Ravi Patel (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) shot NU's second-best round of the day Sunday with a 5-over 76 to finish 45th in the individual standings with a 21-over 205 (74-79-76-76).
