The morning came awfully quick ... the 5:40 a.m. wake-up call was hard to get up to. I had to hit snooze for about 10 more minute before starting the day. However, by the time I arrived at the stadium I was up and ready to go. I think it's going to take a few more days until my body starts to adjust to these early mornings since I was sleeping in later during spring break. One thing that I never thought I would get used to was waking up this early for football practice, but I've somehow managed to get used to it. Not only that, I actually prefer morning practices better because of class scheduling and it leaves more time to get homework done.
Today's practice was a definite improvement from yesterday's. We still have a lot of work to do and a lot of aspects to improve on but that is what spring ball is for. I've been real impressed with the guy's attitudes and work ethic so far, especially the wide receivers. We all have some big shoes to fill and we recognize that, but that challenge is only making us work harder and get better. Everyone in the media keeps asking me about how we are going to replace all these skill players that we lost from last year's team. It's the same story every year. Guys step up and not only fill the roles, but make a huge impact. Take our offensive line last year for example, everyone was worried about the lack of experience but young guys like Al Netter and Ben Burkett stepped and we had one of the best offensive lines, if not the best o-line in the country. In regards to quarterback, I've been playing with Mike for four years now and I've seen this kid play and I have nothing but respect and confidence in his abilities to play QB for this team.
After practice today, I headed out for my first day of classes. Fortunately, I'm finishing up my last religion course this quarter just in time to complete my double major (communication studies and religion) before I graduate at the end of this spring. After class I spend some time preparing for FCA. I was the speaker at our large group meeting so I had a couple of notes I wanted to brush up before I spoke at the meeting. Our FCA group meets once a week on Tuesday nights and it usually consists of some sort of game, worship music and a speaker. Our FCA huddle doesn't have any staff members and is actually led by all student-athletes here at NU. Other than our weekly meeting, we also do community service outreaches, retreats and social outings like our annual camping trip in the spring. I've been a leader now for four years in FCA and it has been the greatest experience of my life! My faith is something that is not just important to me, but it is at the core of who I am. I love the opportunities that I have to share with not just my teammates but the rest of the athletic community here at Northwestern. I've met some of the greatest people in the world in that group and made some friendships that will last forever. My experience with FCA at Northwestern has actually led me to the conclusion that I want to pursue a career in the ministry, which will most likely lead me into seminary after college. Until then, I'm going to focus on the opportunities I that I have here at NU!
