Northwestern Finishes Eighth at Big Ten Championships

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Northwestern concluded the 2009 Big Ten Championships hosted by Purdue with an eighth-place finish after Saturday evening's finals session.
The Wildcats accrued 213 total points, finishing way ahead of ninth-place Iowa's total of 144. NU was 33 points behind seventh-place Penn State. Michigan won the Big Ten title with 829 points, running away from second-place Ohio State's 521 total.
Senior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) was named second-team All-Big Ten after the conclusion of the meet. Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree nod for NU.
Saturday Preliminary Session:
Northwestern earned six entries into scoring finals during the morning preliminary sessions Saturday at the Big Ten Championships hosted by Purdue. A pair of seniors picked up championship final berths on the final day of their careers at the conference meet.
Beckman kicked off the final Big Ten Championships day of his career in fine fashion, earning a spot in the `A' final of the 200 back with a career-best and NCAA `B' provisional qualifying time of 1:43.39. Beckman was fifth overall during the preliminary heats.
Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) was NU's top finisher in the 100 free during the morning session, swimming a career-best time of 44.77 but failing to earn a second swim.
A pair of Wildcats made the consolation final in the 200 breast, giving Northwestern a pair of point scorers in the event. Senior John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep) was 15th overall in the prelims with a 2:00.14 while sophomore Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) took the final spot in the heat with a career-best 2:00.19 and a 16th-place overall finish. Tyler made the `A' final in both the 200 and 400 individual medley events earlier at the Championships, giving him points in all three of his individual races at the 2009 Big Ten meet.
Also of note in the 200 breast was the race swum by freshman Nathan Butler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), who cut nearly six full seconds off his seed time to turn in a career-best 2:02.93 and finish 31st.
Northwestern turned in its best team effort in an individual event during the prelims of the 200 fly, placing three Wildcats in scoring heats and four in evening finals. Nilsson was sixth overall in the prelims with a season-best and `B' cut of 1:45.39 to make his third championship final of the meet.
Both Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) and Peter Park (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) qualified for the consolation final. Mathews was 13th overall in the morning with a season-best 1:47.67 and Park swam a 1:48.11 to notch the 16th and final spot in the `B' heat. Park's time moved him into fifth on NU's all-time top performers list in the event.
Chris Doman (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Charles Prep (Columbus, Ohio)) made the bonus final in the 200 fly with a career-best 1:49.21, ending up 23rd overall in the morning.
Saturday Finals Session:
In the 1,650 free heats contested throughout the afternoon, freshman John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) scored points for Northwestern with a 14th place finish in 15:23.43. His swim was the first for the Wildcats in the event all season long.
Beckman took sixth in the championship heat of the 200 back, swimming another `B' time of 1:43.53.
In the consolation final of the 200 breast, both Tyler and Franklin moved up from their prelim positions. Tyler swam a 2:00.01 to take 13th in the event while Franklin was 14th with a 2:00.37.
Nilsson improved his time from the prelims of the 200 fly, but still ended up eighth overall in the event. Nilsson swam a 1:45.33 to earn 11 points for the Wildcats. In the consolation final, Mathews had a 1:47.66 to take 13th place while Park swam a 1:47.84 to capture 14th position. Doman was 23rd overall in the event and seventh in the bonus final.
The Wildcats concluded the meet with an eighth-place finish in the 400 free relay, getting a season-best and NCAA `B' cut of 2:56.30 from the squad of Beckman, Nilsson, Truman Liang (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hunter College High School) and Kerr.
