EVANSTON, Ill. -- Coming off its first 10-win season since 2004, Northwestern is progressing through its 2009 spring schedule. Sam Greene and Jennifer Baumann netted goals in the 'Cats' 2-0 win over Northern Illinois and Carolyn Edwards has been stout in goal playing the bulk of the minutes between the pipes.
"We have put together one of the most exciting off-season competition schedules in NU Women's Soccer history," head coach Stephanie Erickson said. We will take on the Chicago Red Stars and Purdue early in our Spring season. It will be an incredible experience for us and Purdue to play against players at the professional level."
"Along with playing local foes, Loyola, NIU and Depaul, we look forward to an exciting event at Soldier Field on April 26th," Erickson said. "We will participate in the first-ever Chicagoland-area Kicks Against Breast Cancer Tournament featuring Notre Dame, Illinois, Wisconsin, Marquette, NIU, and Depaul."
"We have already seen excellent development this winter and we are excited to see those improvements show up in these competitive games."
Although the Wildcats graduated offensive firepower, defensive stalwarts and leadership, NU brings back a ton of experience for the 2009 season. Sam Greene led the 'Cats with eight assists and 14 points. Alicia Herczeg is coming off a junior campaign where she notched four goals and three assists including two game-winning goals.
In the midfield, Emily Langston comes off a freshman campaign that saw her net two goals and notch two assists. Jennifer Baumann saw action in 19 games and Colleen Antas came off the bench in 14. On defense, Leigh Jakes will help lead a unit with plenty of experience. Nicole Duller started all 20 games of her freshman season and Kirstyn Atkinson saw action in 17 games in her sophomore season. In goal, Carolyn Edwards returns for her junior season after collection 10 wins in her first year as the starter.
