EVANSTON, Ill. -- After posting an impressive 4-3 victory at Middle Tennessee State last weekend, Northwestern returns home to Combe Tennis Center Feb. 15 for a Sunday doubleheader. Looking to improve on their best record since the 2000-01 season, the Wildcats are set to host Ball State and Lewis at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.
The `Cats have a 48-6 combined record so far this dual season, dropping only three matches each in singles and doubles. Captain Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) leads the team with a 6-0 record in singles. He and partner Joshua Graves (Milwaukee, Wisconsin/Nicolet) have also posted an undefeated 6-0 record, mostly at No. 2.
SCOUTING THE CARDINALS Northwestern holds the edge in all-time meetings with a 15-9 record against Ball State. The Cardinals are 4-2 on the season, their losses coming at the hands of Illinois and Michigan. The Cards are on a three-match win streak led by senior Jose Perdomo, this week's Mid-American Conference Tennis Player of the Week.
During the fall tournament season, the Wildcats and Cardinals faced off at the season-opening Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The `Cats held a 4-3 edge in singles, with wins coming from Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hills), Alex Sanborn, Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Alexander Thams (Stockholm, Sweden/Enskilda Gymnasiet). NU also had the edge in doubles, winning two of three matches.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Sunday's match-up will be the first between the Wildcats and Flyers. Lewis opens its season slate Friday afternoon with a doubleheader against Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech. Freshman Uno Lapimaa was ranked 8th in the ITA Division II Midwest Fall Rankings.
