2009 Big Ten Singles Consolation Draw (Complete)
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The 2009 Big Ten Indoor Singles and Doubles Championship, hosted by Michigan State, concluded Monday. Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) and Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) won their respective semifinals to advance to the consolation final, a match that was left unplayed.
In the main draw, Michigan junior Chris Madden defeated Indiana's Josh McTaggart, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in the final and won the title of 2009 Big Ten Indoor Singles Champion.
Monday morning, McCarthy won his quarterfinal over fellow Wildcat Mark Schanerman (North Miami Beach, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop HS) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
In the bottom half of the draw, Sanborn defeated Indiana's Will Kendall in a seesaw 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 match to set up the all-Wildcat final, which was left unplayed.
This tournament concludes Northwestern's fall schedule. The Wildcats are back in action in January, when they host Ball State and Illinois-Chicago at Combe Tennis Center on Jan. 17 to kick off the 2010 dual season.
