EVANSTON, Ill. -- As rain forced the tournament to move indoors for the second consecutive day, Northwestern was undefeated in singles play Saturday at the 2009 Wildcat Invitational. Five 'Cats combined for a 10-0 record as Sidarth Balaji (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and Chris Jackman (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) moved on to the Flight B and Flight C finals, respectively.
With weather once again forcing the tournament indoors, the decision was made to complete two rounds of singles rather resume doubles on Sunday. Play will resume Sunday morning at Vandy Christie Tennis Center with doubles at 8 a.m., followed by singles.
Freshman Sidarth Balaji improves to 5-1 on the season with his run to the Flight B finals. He started the day with a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Marquette's Jacob Straus. Later in the day, he defeated DePaul's Vanja Grgec in a third set superbreaker to advance to the finals, where he will meet Drake's James McKie.
In Flight C, freshman Chris Jackman will also play for a championship when he faces Wisconsin's Varun Chari on Sunday. Jackman defeated DePaul's Matija Palinic 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinal and Marquette's Drake Kakar in the semifinal to advance Saturday afternoon.
In Flight A singles, Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) defeated Mroziewicz and then Ball State's Edwardo Pavia en route to the consolation final. Spector improves to 4-2 on the season.
Junior Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) also won two matches Saturday. He defeated Toledo's Nutthavit Likitkumchorn 6-3, 7-6(3) and then Iowa's Reinoud Haal 6-4, 6-2.
In his first tournament of the season, freshman Mark Schanerman (North Miami Beach, Fla./Dr. Michael M. Krop HS) advanced to the final of the Flight B consolation draw. His two straight-set victories came at the expense of DePaul senior Alasdair Graetz and Western Michigan junior Brad Noel.
Play at the 2009 Wildcat Invitational continues Sunday morning at 8 a.m. Check the 2009 Wildcat Invitational Tournament Central for complete results and draws.
