EVANSTON, Ill. -- Weather was a major factor Friday afternoon at the 2009 Wildcat Fall Invitational as rain forced the tournament to move from the outdoor courts of Vandy Christie Tennis Center to the indoor courts inside Combe Tennis Center. Northwestern freshmen Sidarth Balaji (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and Chris Jackman (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) each scored opening round victories for the 'Cats.
Freshman Jackman kicked it off for the 'Cats with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Toledo's Robbie McCallum in Flight C singles for his first win of the season. Next up will be DePaul's Matija Palinic, who dropped a set in his first round match, in a tiebreak.
In Flight B singles, Balaji defeated Toledo's Levi Bent Lee in straight sets to set up a meeting with Ball State's Jacob Straus in the second round. Balaji and Jackman also teamed in Flight A doubles, dropping their first round match to Mark Rutherford and Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley of Marquette, 8-4.
Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) dropped their Flight A opening round matches in straight sets to DePaul's Ben Hartman and Ball State's Cliff Morrison, respectively. However, later in the afternoon, they won their Flight A doubles match, 8-6, over DePaul's Matija Palinic and Douglas Perrin.
Freshman Mark Schanerman dropped his Flight B singles first round match to Iowa's Patrick Dwyer, 6-1, 6-1.
Play at the Wildcat Invite resumes Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. at Combe Tennis Center. Weather permitting, matches will then move outside at 9 a.m.
