EVANSTON, Ill. -- Four Wildcats are headed to the 2009 ITA Midwest Regional Championships hosted by the University of Michigan. Play in the 64-player singles main draw will begin Friday. Northwestern is led by senior Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid), the lone Wildcat to compete in last season's tournament.
Qualifying rounds of the 2009 regionals are taking place all-day Thursday and will conclude Friday morning. The top two seeds in the main draw are Ohio State's Justin Kronauge and Wisconsin's Moritz Baumann.
In the top quarter of the draw, senior Alex Sanborn will face Ohio State's Matt Allare in the first round. Their match is scheduled for approximately 12 p.m. Friday.
Two Wildcat freshmen will be making their regional debuts. Spencer Wolf (Coral Springs, Fla./Laurel Springs) will face Toledo's Nutthavit Likitkumchorn. Mark Schanerman (North Miami Beach, Fla/Dr. Michael M. Krop HS), who posted a 2-2 record in the Wildcat Fall Invitational, will take on Stephen Havens of Notre Dame in first round action. Both matches are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday.
The lone Wildcat in the bottom quarter of the draw, sophomore Tobias Reitz (Reinbeck, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbeck) will face a qualifier in the first round.
Reitz and Sanborn, the No. 9 seed in the doubles draw, have a first round bye. Schanerman and Wolf will take on Cleveland State's Ryan Hamning and Phil Orno in the first round, not before 5 p.m. EST.
