EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern Wildcats are holding the second annual Walk for Randy 5K Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 25 before the annual Spring Football Game. The Walk is being conducted to honor the memory of former NU football coach Randy Walker, who died June 29, 2006.
Last year, over 200 Wildcat supporters participated in the 5K Walk before the Wildcat Football Spring Game, including former and current student-athletes from several Wildcat varsity sports. This year another incredible supporter, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, has signed on to co-host the event with the proceeds from the Walk going to the Randy Walker Memorial Scholarship Fund and the Heart Association.
The cost to participate in the Walk is $15 in advance (must register by April 20) and $20 on the day of the event. Click on the Buy Tickets link on NUsports.com to register today or e-mail wildcatmarketing@northwestern.edu for more details.
The start and finish line is at the corner of Walker Way (next to the NU Nicolet Football Center and Ryan Field) and Ashland Avenue. Former Wildcat football players also will walk with Wildcat fans and Tammy Walker will serve as the Grand Marshal.
"The Walk for Randy is such a wonderful and appropriate tribute to my beloved late husband, Coach Randy Walker. This event combines two of his loves -- Northwestern Football and walking for exercise. He, along with his dog Magic, could often be spotted along Sheridan Road, the lakefront, and around the stadium in Evanston and Wilmette," said Tammy Walker.
"Last year for the inaugural Walk for Randy, it was certainly heartwarming to me and my family to see the many fans, former players, and coaches and their families at the starting line demonstrating their love for Randy and the 'Cats. Won't you please consider participating this year? It is a fun event and you will get a chance to mingle with other fans, former players, and coaches and to support the Randy Walker Fund. Go 'Cats!"
All participants will receive a "Walk with Us" t-shirt and refreshments will be provided by Gatorade and Pepsi.
After the Walk, get the first look at the 2009 Wildcats at the Football Spring Game at noon inside Ryan Field. Plus enjoy the fan-fest area on Walker Terrace before the game, hear from Coach Fitzgerald, Stretch with the 'Cats on the field and get photos with the team after the game. All Spring Game activities are weather permitting, but The Walk will be held rain or shine.
