KENOSHA, Wis. -- Senior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) broke the Northwestern school record in the 1,000 free and shattered two Koenitzer Aquatic Center pool records to lead NU to a 174.5-85.5 victory over Division III Carthage College Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats now are 4-3 on the season after the victory over the Redmen, who entered the meet ranked No. 24 in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Division III poll. Northwestern's series with Carthage began as a split squad meet in past years, but featured NU's full roster on Saturday.
The Wildcats began the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, getting a 1:35.83 from the team of Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton), Nathan Butler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Turpin), Truman Liang (Brooklyn, N.Y./Hunter College High School) and Chris Doman (Pittsburgh, Pa./St. Charles Prep (Columbus, Ohio)).
Nilsson then obliterated the Northwestern school record in the 1,000 free, swimming a 9:04.11 to shatter Brian Davis' previous school mark of 9:13.20 set in 2005. Nilsson's swim beat the field by 52.2 seconds and also broke the Koenitzer pool mark previously held by Jimmy Graves of Badger Aquatics by 27.16 seconds.
Nilsson's swim was so fast, his 500-yard split of 4:31.41 established a pool record in the 500 freestyle as well, breaking the previous standard held by Chris Bateman of St. Olaf College. Nilsson already holds NU's school record in the 500 free with a time of 4:18.86 set in 2007.
With Nilsson's two pool marks set in his 1,000 free swim, Northwestern now holds seven Koenitzer Aquatic Center records. Graduate Kyle Bubolz is the record holder in the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly and 200 fly.
The meet resumed with Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves), Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) and Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) sweeping the top three spots in the 200 free. Tyler had a time of 1:43.22 while Kerr went 1:44.90 and Beckman swam a 1:46.10.
Vogel and Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) were 1-2 in the 100 back, with Vogel earning a 53.14 and Mathews a 53.64. John Franklin (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./North Broward Prep) then won the 100 breast with a 58.35, out-touching Carthage's Stephen Schranck by .08 of a second.
Doman and John Frutiger (Alma, Mich./Alma) won the top two spots in the 200 fly with times of 1:55.54 and 1:59.10, respectively. Liang then beat out Nilsson in the 50 free, earning a 21.43 to top his record-breaking teammate by .01 of a second for first place in the event.
Carthage earned its first event win of the meet in the 100 free when Bryce Davis and Kerr swam to a dead-heat first-place finish with identical times of 47.50. Following that race, Tyler won the 200 back by 4.5 seconds with a time of 1:54.91.
Schranck gave Carthage another win in the 200 breast with a 2:08.43 to beat out Peter Park's (Princeton, N.J./Peddie School) 2:11.18 and Butler's 2:11.48. Frutiger (4:41.28) and Mathews (4:47.58) followed with a sweep of the top two spots in the 500 free before Doman found victory with a 51.62 in the 100 fly.
Nilsson won his second event of the meet with a 1:54.10 in the 200 IM to best the field by 4.63 seconds. Vogel finished right behind Nilsson with a 1:58.73.
The Wildcats concluded the meet with a win in the 400 free relay, getting a 3:07.18 from Kerr, Mathews, Tyler and Liang.
The meet also included North Central College, which competed against Carthage in both men's and women's events.
Northwestern returns to action at 1 p.m. CT Friday, Jan. 16, at Notre Dame.
