Northwestern Post-Game Notes
Northwestern improved its record to 2-0 with its 24-20 defeat of Duke Saturday night. Northwestern returns home to face FCS power Southern Illinois (12-2 last year) at 11 a.m. CT next Saturday, Sept. 13. The game is being televised by the Big Ten Network.
The NU-Duke series is now tied 8-8 overall and NU leads the series 5-3 in Durham ... NU now has won six of the last seven meetings vs. Duke.
Northwestern is now 15-3 in its last 18 games decided by seven points or less.
For the second straight week, Northwestern fell behind to start the game. Duke scored a touchdown on its opening drive to take an early 7-0 lead. Last week, NU trailed 3-0 before coming back to post a 30-10 win over Syracuse. Under head coach Pat Fitzgerald, NU is 3-10 when the opponent scores first.
QB C.J. Bachér completed 14-of-31 passes for 226 yards.
Bachér now has thrown for 200 yards or more in 18 of his 19 career starts.
Bachér caught his first collegiate reception when Eric Peterman threw a 25-yard pass to him on the first play of NU's second TD drive. The Wildcats started that drive, which was capped by a 4-yard TD run by Tyrell Sutton, on the Duke 29-yard line after a muffed punt by the Blue Devils.
Bachér increased his career passing yardage total to 5,328 ---- seventh all-time in school history -- and his career total offense to 5,384 yards -- just 17 yards away from tying Sandy Schwab for sixth all-time in school history.
Bachér completed passes to six different players, with WR Rasheed Ward leading the way with five catches for 60 yards. Peterman led the team in receiving yards with 73 yards on two catches.
RB Tyrell Sutton scored his 26th career rushing touchdown in the first quarter, tying him with Noah Herron for fourth place on NU's all-time rushing TD list. Sutton then moved into fourth place (27th) all alone when he scored a 4-yard TD in the second quarter.
Sutton remained in third place on Northwestern's career all-purpose yardage with 4,194 yards.
WR Ross Lane moved into 12th place on NU's all-time receiving yardage list. With his 46 receiving yards against Duke, he now has 1,514 yards, one yard shy of 11th place.
CB Jordan Mabin returned his first career kickoff return 20 yards in the third quarter.
CB Sherrick McManis matched his career high with 10 total tackles.
LB Prince Kwateng set a career high with 11 total tackles (previous high was seven).
LB Quentin Davie set a career high with eight total tackles (previous high was six).
P Stefan Demos tied a career high with eight punts, averaging 40.0 yards per kick.
