EVANSTON, Ill. -- With the calendar hitting September, college football fans know it's the most exciting time of the year.
In Evanston, there's a group of women who relish the roar of the crowd and the snap of the pigskin just as enthusiastically as their husbands, boyfriends and co-workers. They're called the CatBackers and they're beginning their 11th year of supporting the Wildcats.
Founded in 1997, the CatBackers have their own game schedule: luncheon and coach and player chats before several NU home games. A particular favorite of the group whose stated aim is to `support the Northwestern football program,' is the first meeting of the year, held high above Ryan Field in the Stadium Club.
On Thursday, Sept. 11, with a view like most have never seen before, a special introduction of the head coach, Pat Fitzgerald, by his wife, Stacy, the 200-plus CatBacker members get an update the 'Cats' first two games, meet the new coaches' families, get up-close-and=personal knowledge of some of the new players and renew friendships built on cheering on the Purple and White.
Annual membership dues are $25. There are a total of four luncheons, each with a different coach and player discussing their specialty. Luncheons are priced at $25 each and, with the exception of the Stadium Club kickoff, are open to members only. To learn more about the CatBackers, contact Tammy Walker at 847-467-4799.
