EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern jumped out a 2-0 first-half lead thanks to goals from Amanda Hoffman (North Tustin, Calif./Foothill) and Jessica Palo (Ames, Iowa/Ames) but could not keep the lead as San Diego scored three goals in the second frame to earn a 3-2 win in the first game of the Pepperdine Nike Challenge in Malibu, Calif.
Hoffman headed home a corner kick by Jennifer Baumann (Waukesha, Wis./Catholic Memorial) in the 11th minute to put the Wildcats up early, while Palo deflected in a free kick by California native Alicia Herczeg (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) in the 40th minute to give NU a two-goal cushion entering halftime.
Goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards (Lincolnshire, Ill./Stevenson) made five saves in the loss.
NU (2-2) hits the field again Sunday when it takes on host Pepperdine at 3 p.m. CT.
