EVANSTON, Ill. -- In an outstanding day two performance at the Wildcat Fall Invitational, Northwestern went a combined 14-3 in singles and doubles action. Graduate student Alexander Thams (Stockholm, Sweden/Enskilda Gymnasiet) is now an undefeated 6-0 on the season after advancing to the semifinal of the Flight A singles draw.
Of a total of eight players in the semifinals of the two draws, four are Wildcats: Marc Dwyer and Thams in Flight A and Peter Rispoli (Naples, Fla./St. Stephen's (Texas)) and Tobias Reitz (Reinbeck, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbeck) in Flight B.
Thams and Dwyer will face DePaul's Jose Moncada and Iowa's Christian Bierich, respectively, for a spot in the finals of Flight A singles. In Flight B, Reitz will face off against top-seeded Tommy McGeorge of Iowa while Rispoli gears up for Western Michigan's Pablo Olivarez.
Freshman Joshua Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) bounced back from a loss on Friday to win two straight and make it to the semifinals of the Flight A singles consolation draw. His next opponent will be
The 'Cats also field two of the four final teams in doubles: Rispoli and Graves in Flight A and Philip Kafka (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill) and Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) in Flight B.
Rispoli and Graves cruised to an 8-1 victory over DePaul's Graetz and Moncada in the semifinal. They will face the tandem of Michael Calderone and Zeyand Montasser of Western Michigan for the title on Sunday.
The last match left on court, Kafka and Spector pulled out a tight match to defeat Iowa's Patrick Dwyer and Gentry Kaegi, 8-6, after starting off down an early break.
The 'Cats' Andrew McCarthy and Eric Spector withdrew from singles play.
Play resumes Sunday morning at 8 am with singles play in the consolation draws. Both singles finals are scheduled for 12:30 pm with the doubles finals at 2 pm.
