EVANSTON, Ill. -- Fresh off her medal-winning performance with the U.S. Olympic Team in Beijing, Lauren Lappin will join Northwestern as its volunteer coach for the 2009 season, head coach Kate Drohan announced today.

"I'm very excited to be here at Northwestern," Lappin said. "I'm eager to contribute in any way I can to the tremendous softball program NU has built. It will be fun to see all of the talent and great personalities we have here, and I'm looking forward to being a part of Northwestern's athletic program."

Lappin knocked in a pair of runs for Team USA at the 2008 Olympic Games, her second stint with the team after being an alternate for the 2004 squad. She also was a member of the 2007 Pan American Gold-winning and World Cup champion teams for USA Softball.

"We are thrilled to have Lauren join the Northwestern family," Drohan said. "Lauren will enhance every aspect of our program with her great knowledge and the enthusiasm she has for the game. The team can't wait to get started."

A standout at Stanford from 2003-06, Lappin was a four-time All-Pac-10 selection and a two-time conference Defensive Player of the Year after playing both catcher and shortstop for the Cardinal. She won two NFCA All-America accolades and batted .337 for her collegiate career. In 2004, Lappin was a member of the Women's College World Series All-Tournament team.

Professionally, Lappin is in her second season as a member of the PFX Tour.
