Box Score

EVANSTON, Ill. - David Barszczowski was completely spent by the end of his team's match at No. 20 Northwestern Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field. The Wildcats forced the IUPUI goalkeeper to make 10 saves and face a whopping 29 shots overall as NU dominated from start to finish in a 2-0 win as part of the Lakeside Classic.

For all of Northwestern's offensive pressure, it fell one goal shy of earning a share of the Classic title as Northern Illinois, like the 'Cats, won both of their matches, but the Huskies finished the tournament with a +4 goal differential to +3 for NU.

Had it not been for Barszczowski's efforts, the Wildcats would have claimed the title going away. Northwestern controlled possession throughout but managed just the two tallies despite taking 22 more shots than the Jaguars.

Sophomore Matt Eliason got NU on the board at the 9:56 mark when he made a great individual effort near the top of the box and caught Barszczowski out of the net to put the Wildcats up 1-0. Eliason would finish with a match-high eight shots in the contest.

Even though Northwestern was in total control and out-shot IUPUI 12-1 over the opening 45 minutes of play, it only maintained a one-goal advantage at the half.

The Wildcats finally added an insurance goal at the 50:42 mark when Tyler Voigt fed Eamon O'Neill from the right flank and the junior found the back of the net. Still needing one more goal to earn as share of the Classic crown, NU kept the pressure on.

Jack Hillgard made a diving header for what appeared to be a goal, but it was wiped off the board when the 'Cats were called for being offsides. With just over four minutes left, Eliason's header hit the crossbar and Oliver Kupe's ensuing header went just high.

Misha Rosenthal needed to make just one save to earn his second consecutive shutout to start the season in goal for Northwestern.

The Wildcats return to action at 3:30 p.m. Central time Friday when they face Iona in Easton, Pa., as part of the Lafayette Classic.
