EASTON, Pa. -
No. 16 Northwestern broke open a 1-1 tie at the intermission with three second-half goals in opening the Lafayette Classic with a 4-1 win over Iona Friday afternoon.
The Wildcats (3-0-0) fell behind early in the contest when the Gaels (0-2-0) scored on an own goal by NU at just the 2:15 mark.
However, Northwestern knotted things up at 20:59 when junior Mark Blades connected on a direct kick from 20 yards out. The 'Cats had a golden opportunity to take the lead heading into the break as they were awarded a penalty kick, but Brian Usinger hit the post to allow the Gaels go into the break tied with NU.
The Wildcats took charge early in the second half as Drew Ratner scored on a header off a corner kick by Geoff Fallon just seven minutes into the period. It only took Northwestern a little over three minutes later to pad their lead when Matt Eliason beat Iona keeper Nils Binstock with another header to make it 3-1. Tyler Voigt was credited with an assist on the play.
Voigt put the match out of reach at 65:32 when he scored off an assist from Carl Pett.
Northwestern out-shot Iona 16-7, including 7-2 in the second half. The Gaels did not record a shot on goal in the contest meaning Misha Rosenthal didn't need to make a save to earn the win. NU's defense has limited its opponents to a grand total of two shots on goal in the first three matches this season.
The Wildcats wrap up play at the Lafayette Classic at noon Central time Sunday when they take on the host Leopards.
