KENOSHA, Wis. -- Northwestern's 13th practice of the 2008 preseason took place Thursday morning at UW-Parkside with the Big Ten Network on hand to tape its 90-minute "Big Ten Tonight: Football Practice" broadcast. The show will be shown at 8 p.m. CT tonight (Aug. 14) and again at 3:30 p.m. CT Friday afternoon (Aug. 15).
Northwestern graduate and lead Big Ten Tonight anchor Dave Revsine along with football analysts Gerry DiNardo and Howard Griffith were on hand for the show. Mike Hall served as the sideline reporter. Along with Revsine's NU ties, DiNardo is the uncle of Wildcat redshirt freshman defensive lineman Jack DiNardo.
The Network built a set on The Hill overlooking the two practice fields at Parkside, while several Northwestern family members and program friends sat adjacent to the set near the Mims' Wildcat family tailgate van.
Former NU quarterback and 2000 Big Ten champion Zak Kustok stopped by to be interviewed for the show, as did Northwestern's WGN Radio broadcast team of Dave Eanet and Ted Albrecht. During practice, new NU coordinators Mick McCall and Mike Hankwitz dropped by the set, while head coach Pat Fitzgerald joined the crew following the workout.
As for the practice itself, the Wildcats went through a 17-period workout, ending with three full periods of full-go scrimmaging. The offense moved the ball well, but the defense had its moments, too, highlighted by a Brendan Smith (Andover, Mass./New Hampton Prep (N.H.)) interception.
Northwestern returns to the gridiron for a pair of closed practices on Friday, with the first beginning at 9 a.m. and the second starting at 4:45 p.m. Both workouts will be at UW-Parkside. On Saturday, the Wildcats head to Carthage College for a 3 p.m. scrimmage, which is open to everyone.
KENOSHA NOTES:
The Big Ten Tonight show also will feature "mic'd up" sessions with Pat Fitzgerald and linebackers coach Randy Bates. Short interviews with C.J. Bachér, Smith and Tyrell Sutton were conducted.
The Big Ten Network will broadcast its Northwestern Preview show on August 22.
