KENOSHA, Wis. -- On the fifth day of Camp Kenosha Wednesday at UW-Parkside, Northwestern held a shorter morning practice before competing in its annual watermelon-eating contest. The Wildcats will head to Carthage College Wednesday night for a closed practice session beginning at 6 p.m.

Rains during the early morning did not hold up, diminishing just as the players began their warm-ups. The Wildcats spent the final three periods of the practice in a scrimmage, with both the offensive and defensive units making several big plays.

Following the scrimmage, the Wildcats competed in the annual tradition that is the Camp Kenosha watermelon-eating contest. Each Wildcat on NU's leadership council chose a representative from their team to compete, with redshirt freshman wide receiver Charles Brown (Chicago, Ill./Robeson) coming out on top in a close race during which multiple teams claimed victory.

Q&A with watermelon eating contest champion, redshirt freshman wide receiver Charles Brown

Q: What was your strategy coming into the contest?
A: I just wanted to eat fast. I've always been a really fast eater so it was pretty easy for me.

Q: How did you end up as your team's representative?
A: I went to my team leader and said `I got it, I'm going to win," and that's what I did, I won.

Q: Does your watermelon-eating swagger translate to the field?
A: If you don't have your confidence level up, then in anything you do you are basically setting yourself up for failure. You have to be confident in everything that you do.

Q: When you saw your first contest last year as a freshman, did you think then you were going to win it one day?
A: Oh yeah, most definitely. Last year I saw it and I said `that seems pretty easy, I can do that.' I've been waiting for this time and it finally came and I won.

Q: Do you have an second career in competitive eating in your future?
A: (Laughs) No.
