FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -- Senior Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) matched his career-best finish of fourth place in the 100 fly Saturday at the NCAA Championships, breaking his own school record with a 45.74 in the finals to earn 15 points for Northwestern, helping the Wildcats to 15th place in the meet after two days of competition.
In the prelims of the 100 fly, Bubolz qualified fifth overall for the championship final with a season-best time of 46.10. During the evening swim, Bubolz was in second after swimming the first 50 yards in 20.99, but he was chased down by eventual champion Albert Subirats from Arizona and third-place finisher Austin Staab of Stanford before holding on for fourth place.
The All-America honor Bubolz earned in the 100 fly brings his career total to 17 after picking up two during Thursday's action and 14 in his first three trips to the NCAA Championships. Bubolz qualified for the championship final in the 100 fly in each of the past three seasons after making the consolation final as a freshman in 2005.
In other NU action Friday, junior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) turned in a career-best effort during the preliminaries of the 200 free with a 1:35.91, but he fell just short of the points with a 21st-place overall finish. Nilsson's time was .25 of a second away from 16th place and a spot in the consolation final.
Northwestern is in 15th place with 45 points, 10 points ahead of 16th place Kentucky and five behind 14th place Virginia.
