Northwestern Qualifies Trio for Championship Heats

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern qualified three swimmers for a pair of championship heats during Thursday morning preliminary action at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Contrary to prior seasons, the Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships are employing a new scoring system in 2008, similar to the one used by the Southeastern Conference in 2007. There will be three scoring finals of six swimmers each, meaning only the top six after preliminary heats are eligible to win the Big Ten title instead of the top eight, but 18 total swimmers will score in each event instead of the traditional 16.
Junior Eric Nilsson (Weston, Mass./Weston) cruised into the championship final in the 500 free, easing his way to an NCAA `B' provisional qualifying standard of 4:21.71 that cut just .01 of a second off his seed time and left him sixth after the morning session. Senior Daniel Walls (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) took second in his heat with a season-best time of 4:30.20 to finish 33rd overall. Right behind Walls was freshman Alex Tyler (Birmingham, Mich./Birmingham Groves) in 36th place with a season-best 4:30.75 (36th) to lead the remaining contingent of four other Wildcats who competed in the event.
Junior Adam Beckman (Kearney, Neb./Kearney) was Northwestern's top finisher in the 200 IM, turning in a season-best 1:50.17 to finish in the No. 30 position. Sophomore Jake Vogel (Canton, Ill./Canton) cut more than three seconds off his seed time to finish in the No. 40 spot, with his time of 1:51.57 moving him into second on NU's top-times list in the event for the season.
In the 50 free, seniors Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) and Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija) finished with identical season-best and NCAA `B' cuts of 19.66 to tie for first place after the preliminary heats. 2007 Northwestern graduate Matt Grevers won all four of the previous conference titles in the 50 free, so Bubolz and Barbic are attempting to keep the crown in the NU family.
Finishing just .11 of a second out of the scoring spots was freshman Brian Kerr (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids), whose time of 20.35 was good for 25th place overall and moved him into third on Northwestern's top times list in the event on the season.
In 1-meter diving prelims, senior Ryan McIntosh (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) qualified 16th overall and junior Alex Kiaie (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) ended up 17th to both advance to scoring finals. McIntosh had a score of 270.00 while Kiaie scored a 263.50.
