Northwestern Drops Big Ten Opener At Michigan, 6-1

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern took on No. 19 Michigan in the first dual match of its Big Ten slate Friday evening and fell, 6-1. The Wildcats are now 6-6 in duals this season. Michigan improves to 6-1, with its only loss coming at the hands of No. 1 Virginia. Junior Marc Dwyer won a seesaw match at No. 1 singles for the 'Cats' lone point of the dual.

Michigan jumped out to an early lead by taking the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3. Northwestern's duo of David Seyferth and Juan Gomez fell, 8-2, to Michigan's 46th-ranked Chris Madden and Andrew Mazlin. At No. 1, the Wolverines' 29th-ranked Mike Sroczynski and Jason Jung defeated Marc Dwyer and Alex Sanborn, 8-5.

The 'Cats' tandem of Pete Rispoli and Alexander Thams took No. 2 doubles over Peter Aarts and Matko Maravic. They improve to 9-3 at No. 2 this dual season.

The Wolverines continued to build on their lead by quickly taking wins at No. 6 and No. 2. Northwestern's Seyferth fell to Chris Madden, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 6 while sophomore captain Alex Sanborn was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Sroczynski at No. 2. Sanborn drops to 9-3 in duals this year, with a 1-2 record at No. 2 singles.

Northwestern faced identical battles at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 as each Wildcat on court dropped the first set and forced a tiebreak in the second set. At No. 3, Michigan clinched the dual with a 6-4, 7-6(3) Maravic victory over Thams.

Senior Juan Gomez suffered a 6-1, 7-6(3) defeat to Peter Aarts at No. 5 as the Wolverines continued to build on their lead. At No. 4, freshman Rispoli also dropped a tough tiebreak in the second set to fall 6-3, 7-6(5) to Mazlin.

The last match on the courts was the match-up at No.1 between Dwyer and Jung. The Wildcat dropped the first set, 6-2, but clawed back to take the second, 6-3. Dwyer was up two early in the third, 4-0, and held on through a spirited effort by Jung to take the third set, 6-4.

The 'Cats stay on the road to continue their Big Ten season at Penn State on March 2. Their next home match is Tuesday, March 4 against Vanderbilt at 7 p.m.
