Northwestern Head Coach Bill Carmody
Opening Statement...
"I thought we defended well throughout the game. It's not much of a press, but I think Craig Moore and Mike Thompson were causing some problems there. We were just going along, going along, and then all of a sudden little Juice [Thompson] got a steal and then Craig got his hand on a ball and we got a couple lay ups. All of a sudden we had a 10-2 run. It made a big difference. I know during that stretch there was a long time where they had 10 points; it seemed like an awful long time. So I think our defense was pretty good. They had some good looks that they missed, also, so you have to remember that. But this team has been out rebounding their opponents by 11 per game. We haven't traditionally been a very good rebounding team, so I was just happy to see they didn't get too many extra shots on us. I'm a little concerned about the turnovers; we have 16 turnovers, two or three of them came in the last minute there. As I said outside, I think we can remedy them, because I think we had four screening turnovers; three on Luka [Mirkovic] and one I think on Ivan [Peljusic]. So our centers really contributed to the turnovers. But I thought it was a nice balance offensively and again just a nice team defense."
On the play of freshman center Kyle Rowley...
"He's a big kid, he's a freshman, he has only played a few games. Even though he turned the ball over a few times, a couple of walks, you saw that he's a mountain of a man. He's a little niftier than you think; he's got a little touch around the basket. He actually beat a guy down the court today. That's a first, mark that one down. There's some progression. Again, he walked twice and some balls went out of his hands, but there's something there I think."
On the play of freshman John Shurna...
"He's very active. He can shoot the ball, he's a fairly athletic kid, he's long. I think he's going to get better and better. He's been a little tentative the last couple of games, and I had to tell him today at shoot-around that he could play with anybody. If their not it the league, he could play with them. I mean if you're playing against Donyell Marshall for example, then no. But anybody else you can play against."
On Northwestern's next opponent, Florida State...
"They have good players, they're well-coached. They're an athletic team. You know, they're good, it's a good team. Inside, outside, speed, everything. So it's going to be a great test for us."
On maintaining a lead...
"We've had some pretty sizeable leads at halftime this year and have lost them. We lost to Butler the other night and had a nine-point lead at half. Basically that's what we talked about at halftime. You can't just try to maintain and coast out and finish the game. You have to have a killer instinct their and have n edge and go after guys. We still haven't gotten there. It's part of coaching and getting a team to grow."
