EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern heads to the Big Ten Singles Championship this weekend, hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Seven Wildcats are in the 64-player main draw, including No. 3 seed Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) and No. 16 Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid).
Dwyer opens play against Michigan's Chris Madden while Sanborn will face Minnesota's Michael Sicora. Freshman Eric Spector (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) and sophomore Peter Rispoli (Naples, Fla./St. Stephen's (Texas)) are also set for Wolverines, facing off against Michigan's Matt Parks and Drew Daniel, respectively.
The 'Cats' Tobias Reitz (Reinbeck, Germany/Sachsenwaldschule Reinbeck) and Alexander Thams (Stockholm, Sweden/Enskilda Gymnasiet) will both play Purdue Boilermakers in the first round. Reitz faces Slavko Bijelica and Thams takes on Eric Ramos.
Josh Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) rounds out the 'Cats in the draw, scheduled to play Penn State's Jake Toole in the first round.
Andrew McCarthy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) and Philip Kafka (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill) will compete in the 12-player qualifying draw on Friday, each looking for a victory to secure a spot in the main draw.
Michigan looks to keep the tournament title for the third straight year as the Wolverines' Matko Maravic and Jason Jung have claimed the trophy the past two seasons.
The first and second rounds of the tournament will be played on Saturday, Nov. 1. Play continues with two rounds each on Sunday and Monday. Monday's action will be televised by the Big Ten Network.
