UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- No. 25 Penn State's goal in the opening minutes of the second half proved to be the difference Friday night as the Nittany Lions defeated the Wildcats, 1-0. Carolyn Edwards was again stout between the pipes, stopping eight shots -- including five in the first half.
With the loss, Northwestern falls to 6-4-1, 1-2 in conference. No. 25 Penn State improves to 7-5 overall, 2-0 in the Big Ten.
After early shots by Alicia Herczeg and Sam Greene missed the mark, Penn State forced Edwards' first save of the match in the 18th minute. After a corner kick by the Nittany Lions at 20:46, Edwards made three-straight saves in the 22nd minute on three shots by Carly Niness.
PSU saw a shot hit the crossbar in the 26th minute and Edwards made another stop in the 30th before Jessica Palo had NU's first of two shots on goal at 32:50. The first half ended with no score despite PSU holding a significant advantage in shots on goal.
Jenny Dunn took the first shot of the second half -- a blocked shot in the 53rd minute -- before Penn State got on the board in the 54th on a goal by Meghan Gill.
Greene fired a shot wide right in the 58th minute and Herczeg forced Penn State's second save in the 60th, but NU could not break through and the Nittany Lions escaped with the 1-0 win.
Herczeg, Dunn and Greene all had two shots while Palo, Jeanette Lorme and Emily Langston also fired shots.
Penn State took 14 shots to nine for the Wildcats and the corner kicks were even at two apiece.
Northwestern returns to action at 2 p.m. CT Sunday at Ohio State.
