Northwestern Blasts Butler

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern upped its record to 4-1 for the first time since the 2004-05 season with a 7-0 win against Butler Friday night at the Combe Tennis Center.
NU opened the match by winning two of three exciting doubles matches to start with a 1-0 lead. Butler took the No. 1 doubles match in a tiebreaker after the teams were locked at seven apiece. Graduate student Alexander Thams (Stockholm, Sweden/Enskilda Gymnasiet) and freshman Peter Rispoli (Naples, Fla./St. Stephen's (Texas)) broke a 5-5 tie with three-straight wins for the 8-5 victory. Senior Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico) and freshman David Seyferth (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) won at No. 3 doubles, also breaking a 5-5 tie and winning in a 9-7 tiebreaker.
NU has lost just one doubles point in its five matches this season.
The Wildcats quickly stole three singles points from the Bulldogs, clinching the win with a 4-0 score. Seyferth was the first to win, breezing to the finish line with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Sophomore Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) then closed out his opponent by a 6-1, 6-3 score. The win was his fifth of the year to lead the 'Cats.
Junior Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) clinched the win minutes after Sanborn's victory, 6-3, 6-2.
Rispoli won a three-set superbreaker at No. 4 for the Wildcats fifth victory, followed by a 7-5, 6-3 Gomez win at No. 5. Thams closed out the match, gutting out the 6-4, 7-6(8-6) win after retiring in his previous two matches.
