Schneeman's Two Goals Propel Wildcats Past Spartans, 3-2

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Northwestern trailed by a goal after one half of play, but senior Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) netted the equalizer and the game-winner to give the Wildcats a 3-2 win over UNC Greensboro Friday afternoon. Freshman Sam Greene (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica) put the 'Cats on the board with her first goal as a Wildcat.
With the win, NU improves to 2-1 while UNC Greensboro drops to 2-1 with its first loss of the year.
"It takes an inspired team to come back from being down two goals," head coach Stephanie Erickson said. "It is a huge to have a win like that early in the season to gain confidence."
Both teams played close to the vest for the first 33 minutes of the match, but UNC Greensboro would strike first. Heather Deutschle's goal gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead at the 33:27 mark.
Deutschle would strike again to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead a little more than three minutes later as she was able to touch the ball past goalkeeper Lauren Johnston (Denver, Colo./Denver East) in the 37th minute.
Alicia Herczeg's (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura) header attempt in the 39th minute was turned away by the Spartan keeper, but NU finally broke though in the 42nd minute. Senior Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville), streaking down the left side, made a cross to a waiting Greene whose header goal cut the deficit to 2-1 at 41:42. Greene paced the Wildcats with three shots in the contest. She now has eight on the season.
Greene, who entered the game second on the Wildcats in shots behind Hans, finally found the net for the first goal of her Northwestern career. The assist gives Hans 66 career points -- six shy of Coach Erickson's all-time mark of 73.
NU trailed 2-1 heading into the half despite out-shooting the Spartans, 5-4.
The half time deficit did not seem to bother the Wildcats too much as NU tied the score less than one minute into the second frame.
Schneeman's goal at 45:55 on a hard shot from the left side evened the score at 2-2. The fifth-year senior gave Northwestern the lead with her second tally of the game in the 74th minute.
Schneeman now has 13 goals and 35 points for her career.
"We had a fifth-year senior take responsibility and turn the game around," Erickson said. "She led our team today." NU won the shot battle 10-7 and Johnston made two saves between the pipes.
Northwestern returns to action at noon Sunday against host Florida Atlantic.
