EVANSTON, Ill. -- A trip to Washington, D.C., provides ample opportunity to see the United States' history being made firsthand, and to tour many sites honoring the rich past of our country. When Northwestern makes it way to our nation's capital Sept. 7-8 for the Georgetown Classic, the Wildcats will be seeking a different kind of history on the volleyball court.
Head coach Keylor Chan enters this weekend one win shy of becoming the second coach in NU volleyball history to amass 100 wins as a Wildcat. In his eighth season at NU, the experienced Mr. Chan brings with him a Northwestern lineup full of faces as fresh as Jimmy Stewart's Mr. Smith from the classic 1939 film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
Veterans like Courtnie Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Ozaukee) and Lindsay Anderson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) had solid outings in Los Angeles last week, but it was a handful of freshmen who made the biggest strides.
Freshman setter Elyse Glab (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) earned her first action, averaging 13.50 assists per game and tallying her first-career double-double with a 54-assist, 13-dig effort Saturday against UC Santa Barbara. Though one game shy of the minimum for inclusion in the Big Ten statistical rankings, Glab's assists average is second in the league.
Redshirt freshman Brittani Gray (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) also tallied her first-career double-double against UC Santa Barbara, recording 10 kills and 22 digs. Her 22 digs are a career-best for any Wildcat besides libero Kate Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg).
Redshirt freshman Sabel Moffett (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) saw her first start in the middle against UCSB, going error-free on the attack for a .471 percentage (8-0-17), while compiling four solo blocks, the best career single-match tally of any current 'Cat.
