EAST LANSING, Mich.-- Northwestern and Michigan State were deadlocked in a first half defensive struggle before the Spartans opened up the scoring with two quick second half goals to beat the Wildcats 4-0, at Ralph Young Field in East Lansing, Mich.
In the first-ever nationally televised field hockey game, the Wildcats (3-5, 0-1) fought hard to regain the momentum, taking four corners in the first 15 minutes of the second half, but were not able to put one past the Spartan (8-1, 1-0) keeper.
With 14 minutes remaining in the game, Michigan State deflected a third goal past Emily Kyle (San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University H.S.) and scored the fourth and final goal of the game on a penalty stroke. Despite the pressure, Kyle managed to register four saves in the game.
NU finished the contest with five penalty corners taken.
The `Cats take a week off before its next game on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Penn State.
