KENOSHA, Wis. -- The first practice of Camp Kenosha is in the books for the Wildcat football team. Northwestern hit the practice field early today at 8 a.m. in full pads and worked out for two hours. They will rest up this afternoon and return for their second practice of the day at 4:45 p.m., this time in shells (helmets and shoulder pads).

"It was hot, humid, muggy and swamp-like," Fitzgerald said. "It was a beautiful kickoff to Camp Kenosha. It's exactly the type of start that you would like to two-a-days. We could not be more fortunate to have this type of situation for our football program. The hospitality and the opportunity to come up here in a football-only environment where we can learn and grow is a huge advantage for our team."

Practice started off with special team drills, focusing on field goals, extra points as well as punt team coverage.

As the morning went on, the Wildcats moved into everyone's favorite: the "Hamburger Drill." The fast-paced, hard-hitting drill isolates a defensive player against an offensive lineman and running back in a about a 3-yard wide running lane.

The morning session also included seven-on-seven passing game exercises as well as 11-on-11 scrimmages, focusing on offensive and defensive execution in the red zone as the practice came to a close.

Overall, Fitzgerald was pleased with his team's performance this morning.

"I thought the energy level this morning was great," Fitzgerald added. "Knowing that we have another practice on the back end and to see how guys were working and communicating was great. A football team can really grow when you have ownership like that so I'm liking where things are going."
