Box Score

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Sixth-seeded Washington used a six-run fifth inning and eight walks to defeat second-seeded Northwestern Friday night in the winner's bracket of the Women's College World Series, 9-0 (5).

With the loss, Northwestern will return to action in the loser's bracket finale at 8 p.m. CT Saturday, June 2, against either Baylor or Texas A&M on ESPN.

In the bottom of the second inning, freshman Nicole Pauly (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) sliced a leadoff double over the first-base bag and into the corner in right field. She then advanced to third on an illegal pitch by Washington starter Danielle Lawrie. After a walk issued to Erin Dyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport), Lawrie notched three-consecutive strikeouts to end the inning unscathed.

Washington took advantage to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Two walks both came around to score after a seeing-eye single through the right side and an RBI groundout against Northwestern starter Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise).

The Huskies added a third run in the top of the fourth. A leadoff walk moved to second when Canney was called for taking too long to pitch. A flyout to right moved the runner to third, and she then scored on a wild pitch to give Washington a three-run lead, 3-0.

In the fourth, Washington became patient at the plate, scoring five runs with the help of four walks before NU recorded the first out. Canney was relieved by freshman Lauren Delaney (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) for three batters in the middle of that stretch, with Delaney issuing a trio of walks before Canney re-entered and fanned the first batter she faced.

A fielder's choice groundout scored another run before Canney could end the inning with the score 9-0.

Canney (32-10) took the loss, allowing seven runs on five hits and five walks.

The start of the game was delayed 2:47 by a severe storm system that swept through the Oklahoma City area.
