EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the third-consecutive year, Northwestern will play in the best two-of-three Super Regional round of the NCAA Tournament for the right to go to the Women's College World Series. The second overall seed in the tournament, NU will face South Carolina this weekend at Sharon J. Drysdale Field. The Gamecocks came out of their own Charleston, S.C., Regional after hosting as the fourth seed in that bracket.
Game one between NU and USC is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT Friday, May 25, with game two slated for 1 p.m. CT Saturday, May 26. The "if necessary" game would begin immediately following Saturday's first contest.
Tickets for the Super Regional are $10 for adults and $5 for youth 18 and under, students with a valid ID and seniors.
Northwestern advanced to the Super Regional by virtue of a perfect 3-0 run through its own Evanston Regional. The Wildcats bested Wright State, 4-1, before knocking off Illinois State twice (5-2, 4-1) to win the title.
South Carolina topped No. 15 seed N.C. State in its opening game of the 2007 NCAA Tournament before falling to Oregon in the winner's bracket. The Gamecocks then eliminated N.C. State before twice defeating the Ducks on championship Sunday to advance.
The last time Northwestern and South Carolina met was in the 2004 NCAA Tournament Regional in Tucson, Ariz. Trailing 3-1 in the seventh inning, the Wildcats scored twice to tie the score before hitting a walk-off, two-run home run in the eighth inning to eliminate the Gamecocks.
The Wildcats are looking for their second-straight berth in the Women's College World Series and their fifth overall as a program. Last season Northwestern finished as the WCWS runner-up, its best showing in program history after also making three-consecutive appearances from 1984-86. NU's previous best finish was a third-place effort in 1984.
