Trio of Wildcats Excelling at National, International Events

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Junior Kyle Bubolz (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) won the national championship in the 100 butterfly at the USA Swimming Spring Nationals in East Meadow, N.Y., while senior Mike Alexandrov (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and junior Bruno Barbic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gymnazija) recently competed at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

Bubolz swam a 53.08 in the 100 fly to win the first national title of his career. He swam a 24.24 first 50 to hold a .66 second advantage over Peter Verhoef, then held on to that edge to win by .54 seconds.

Bubolz also swam the 50 free and the 100 free, finishing fourth in the 100 and sixth in the 50.

At the World Championships, Alexandrov swam for his native Bulgaria. The 2007 NCAA Champion in the 100 breast, he finished sixth in the event at the World's. He also swam the 200 IM (12th), the 200 breast (18th) and the 400 IM (18th).

Barbic, swimming for Croatia, took 13th as a member of the Croatian 400 free relay. He swam individually in the 50 free, earning 26th place.

The Spring Nationals were held March 27-31, while the FINA World Championships were held from March 17 to April 1. All events were swum in long course meters.
