EVANSTON, Ill. -- Sophomore Tammy Williams (Roscoe, Mo./Osceola) has been named the Big Ten's Player of the Week after batting .588 with eight runs scored, a pair of home runs, four steals and a 1.000 slugging percentage during Northwestern's 5-0 weekend to win the championship at the 2007 Worth Invitational.
Williams began the weekend with an RBI, a run scored and a steal in a 3-2 win over Texas Tech before hitting a fifth-inning, go-ahead two-run homer in NU's 2-1 victory against San Diego State.
She then went off Saturday against No. 9 Stanford, going 3-for-4 with a double, a three-run home run and three runs scored in an 11-3, six-inning mercy-rule victory. In Saturday's nightcap -- a 4-0, eight-inning win over No. 11 Oregon State -- Williams was 2-for-4 with two steals and a run scored.
She closed out the weekend with a 2-for-4 performance including a pair of runs scored in a 7-2 win against Oklahoma State.
Williams is Northwestern's first Big Ten Player of the Week this season, but its second conference award winner in 2007. Freshman Lauren Delaney (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) was named Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 13.
