Wildcats Fall to No. 18 South Alabama, 5-2

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. -- Northwestern took the doubles point from No. 18 South Alabama, but the Jaguars took five singles matches to top the Wildcats Friday in Orange Beach, Ala., 5-2. Sophomore Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) won his match at No. 4 singles.
The loss drops Northwestern to 6-9 while the Jaguars improve to 14-3.
The 'Cats captured the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The 54th-ranked pair of seniors Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) downed Robert Hodel and Marek Sramek at No. 1, 8-5.
Senior Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium LobrÜgge) and junior Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico) won their match at No. 3 over Craig Dunne and Jack Baker, 8-5.
At No. 2, Dwyer and freshman Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) fell to R.J. Nagel and Dias Doskarayev, 8-3.
South Alabama won 5-of-6 singles matches with NU's lone win coming at No. 4 where Dwyer defeated Hodel in straight sets, 7-6, 6-1.
At No. 1, Lock fell to the 48th-ranked Doskarayev in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, while Baker downed Tempke at No. 2, 6-3, 6-3.
Christian fell at No. 3 to Sramek, ranked 41st in singles, 6-1, 6-1. Gomez was the only Wildcat to force a third set, falling to Dunne at No. 5, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Nagel defeated Sanborn at No. 6, 6-4, 6-1.
Northwestern returns to Big Ten play when it travels to Purdue to face the Boilermakers at 4 p.m. Friday.
