'Cats Fall to No. 9 Notre Dame, 7-0

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Sophomore Marc Dwyer (Peachtree City, Ga./University of Nebraska-Independent Study H.S.) continued his solid play, forcing a third set at No. 4 singles, but the Wildcats fell to ninth-ranked Notre Dame Sunday, 7-0.
Northwestern drops to 5-8 while the Fighting Irish improve to 10-2.
Dwyer played the closest singles match of the afternoon, battling Ryan Keckley at No. 4. The sophomore dropped a first-set tiebreaker, but stormed back with a 6-3 win in the second set. With the dual already clinched, the match went to a 10-point tiebreaker. Keckley seized the breaker to win the match, 7-6 (8), 3-6, 1-0 (7).
Notre Dame captured the doubles point with a sweep of the three matches. At No. 3, Stephen Bass and Andrew Roth downed Christian Tempke (Wentorf, Germany/Gymnasium LohbrÜgge) and Juan Gomez (Mexico City, Mexico), 8-1.
Matt Christian (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) and Willy Lock (Lima, Peru/Markham College) fell to the ninth-ranked pair of Sheeva Parbhu and Keckley, 8-3.
Alex Sanborn (Houston, Texas/Kinkaid) and Dwyer forced a tiebreaker in their No. 2 doubles match, but fell to Barry King and Brett Helgeson, 8-7 (1)
In singles action, Gomez fell at No. 5 to King, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 3, Notre Dame's 94th-ranked Hegleson downed Christian, 6-1, 6-3.
The Irish took the clincher for a 4-0 lead at No. 1 singles. Lock fell to the 27th-ranked Parbhu in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.
Notre Dame captured the final three matches to complete the shutout. Tempke forced a second-set tiebreaker after a rough first frame, but fell to the 11th-ranked Bass, 6-2, 7-6 (4).
Sanborn also played a close second set, falling 7-5, but he dropped his match at No. 6 to Roth, 6-3, 7-5.
Keckley downed Dwyer with the third set superbreaker to give Notre Dame the 7-0 win.
After a weekend of facing nonconference opponents, the Wildcats return to Big Ten action when they host Wisconsin at 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
