EVANSTON, Ill. -- Freshman Lauren Delaney (Jefferson City, Mo./Helias) has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after posting a 2-0 record with wins over No. 8 Stanford and No. 21 Fresno State during her first weekend of collegiate action.
Delaney went eight strong innings in a complete-game victory over the Bulldogs Friday at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., striking out 10 batters in a 4-3 NU victory. She followed that up with 5.1 innings pitched to earn the W in Northwestern's 3-1 win against the No. 8 Cardinal on Saturday.
Delaney finished the weekend with 3.2 innings of hitless relief Sunday against Cal State Fullerton. On the tournament, she recorded a 1.24 ERA with 16 strikeouts and just four walks.
Dating back to the 2006 season, Northwestern now has won the last five-consecutive Big Ten Pitcher of the Week awards. Current senior Eileen Canney (Paradise, Calif./Paradise) won it three times during that stretch, while now graduated Courtnay Foster picked up the final award of 2006.
