Wildcats Fall to Brown, 73-67

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern rallied back from a 14-point first-half deficit to take a four-point lead midway through the second half, but visiting Brown was able to fight its way to a 73-67 win over the Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena Saturday.
Junior Sterling Williams paced NU (1-3) with a career-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor. Craig Moore and Michael Thompson, who had a career-best nine assists, contributed 14 points apiece.
Freshman Peter Sullivan scored 16 of his team-high 19 points in the second half for Brown. Mark McAndrew added 18 points, including five 3-pointers, and Scott Friske had 17 for the victorious Bears (2-2).
Sullivan hit two free throws with 3:34 left to give Brown a 66-64 lead. Trailing 68-66 with 31.9 seconds remaining, Northwestern had a chance to tie, but Thompson hit only one of two free throws. Brown sank five of its six free throws to close out the game.
Brown raced out to a 26-12 first half lead, as the Bears hit six three-point shots, four by McAndrew. The Wildcats would eventually close to within 38-30 at halftime following a 3-pointer by Moore with eight seconds left in the half.
Northwestern outscored Brown 11-2 to open the second half to take a 41-40 lead. Williams scored seven points for the Wildcats, while NU forced Brown into five quick turnovers. The lead changed hands eight times for the remainder of the game.
Brown shot 55.8 percent from the field (24-of-43), including 12-of-23 from the three-point line, compared to 43.6 percent (24-of-55) for the Wildcats. NU forced the Bears to commit 17 turnovers that resulted in 25 points for the Wildcats.
Northwestern returns to action at 6 p.m. Central time Tuesday when it travels to Virginia as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
