EVANSTON, Ill. -- In the final match of a seven-match home stand, Northwestern pounded Iowa Friday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena, 30-18, 30-20, 30-25, in a contest tape-delay televised by ComcastSportsNet Chicago.
With the win, Northwestern snaps a three-match losing streak and improves to 7-6 overall on the year, 1-3 in the Big Ten. With the loss, Iowa drops its third match in a row to fall to 11-4 on the year, 0-3 in the conference.
The match will air at 3 p.m. CT Saturday, Sept. 30, on CSNChicago.
In game one, Northwestern opened up the first lead of the evening, forcing an Iowa timeout after going up by five, 14-9. A kill by Courtnie Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Ozaukee) and a pair of Hawkeye errors contributed to the run.
The Wildcats came out of the break and continued to apply the pressure, eventually forcing another Hawkeye timeout after making the run 16-4 to take a 23-11 lead. Northwestern eventually would win the game, 30-18, on the strength of eight team blocks.
Sophomore Chelsy Hyser (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere) led the way with five block assists in game one for the Wildcats.
In game two, Northwestern used a 6-0 run midway through to take a commanding 19-10 lead. Two kills by Lindsay Anderson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and single kills by Paulus, Hyser and senior Cassie McLaughlin (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) fueled the run.
After Iowa pulled back within four, 22-18, NU closed the game on an 8-2 run to go up by two games in the match, 30-20. A pair of Lauren Greenwood (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) spurred the rally, which McLaughlin capped with a kill.
Game three was much more competitive, with Iowa at one point holding a five-point lead, 17-12. The Wildcats came all the back to tie, 20-20, then pulled away for a 30-25 game three victory. A pair of Anderson kills midway through the final run put the match away for Northwestern.
Junior Stephanie Jurivich (LaGrange, Ill./St. Ignatius) paced the Wildcats with 12 kills and 36 assists for a double-double. Anderson had 11 kills. Hyser hit a match-best .500 (8-0-16) and added a match-high six blocks, while Jurivich hit .476 (12-2-21) and Anderson notched a .400 hitting percentage (11-1-25).
Freshman Kate Nobilio (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) dug a match-high 19 attacks for the 'Cats.
