EASTERN MICHIGAN at NORTHWESTERN
September 16, 2006
Ryan Field, Evanston, Ill.

  • Northwestern now holds an 11-8-1 all-time record against Mid-American Conference teams and has won four consecutive games against MAC schools, dating to the start of the 2005 season. (NU has wins over Ohio, Northern Illinois, Miami (Ohio) and Eastern Michigan in that stretch.)

  • With the win, NU is assured of at least a .500 nonconference record. With the exception of the 2004 season, Northwestern has broken even in non-Big Ten play each year since 1993. In 12 of the last 14 seasons, the Wildcats have won at least two nonconference contests.

  • In two of its three games this season (Miami and Eastern Michigan), Northwestern held foes under seven points and without a touchdown. The last time NU allowed less than seven points twice in a season was in 1995 (30-6 win against Air Force and 35-0 victory over Wisconsin).

  • For the third straight game, Northwestern has out-rushed its opponent, outgaining the Eagles 156 to 87 yards. In those same three contests, NU's foes have averaged 3.1 yards per carry or less.

  • NU allowed Eastern Michigan only five first downs, 134 total yards (2.5 yards per play), 47 yards passing and nine completions, the lowest totals allowed in a game this year.

  • The Wildcats totaled two sacks today (Demetrius Eaton and David Ngene), giving the team eight in 2006. NU is averaging 2.7 sacks per game this season, compared to one per contest last year.

  • Both of the game's touchdowns were scored by quarterbacks: QB Mike Kafka in the first quarter and QB Andrew Brewer in the third. Both signal callers scored their first collegiate rushing TDs.

  • Kafka is averaging 5.0 yards per carry this season after gaining 33 yards on five rushing attempts today.

  • WR Shaun Herbert led all receivers with six catches and 37 yards. Herbert now ranks eighth among all Northwestern receivers with 135 career receptions. His 1,517 career receiving yards moves him into ninth place on the all-time NU reception yardage list. Herbert has now caught at least one pass in 27 consecutive games, the nation's ninth longest streak.

  • For the second straight game, RB Tyrell Sutton gained more than 90 yards rushing. He led all players with 91 yards today. Sutton gained 99 last week against New Hampshire. Sutton has six career games with 100 or more yards and five career games with 89 to 99 yards. Sutton increased his career rushing total to 1,727 yards, which is 113 yards shy of ninth place on NU's all-time list.

  • In all three games this season, LB Nick Roach has led Northwestern in tackles. He registered nine hits today and has now passed 200 for his career (208 total, including 113 solos).

  • DE Corey Wooten notched his first career interception, while CB Deante Battle recorded his second career pickoff today.

  • KR Sherrick McManis's 40-yard run in the first quarter is a career long and the longest by an NU player this season.
