EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern place-kicker Joel Howells (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) was named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team@ today. He is one of 11 NCAA Division I-A players on the 2006 team.
Nominees have to be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or involved in other community service activities. They also have to display sincere concern and reliability, while also having made a favorable impression on the organizations with which they are involved.
Howells, who is enrolled in graduate school at Northwestern and is in his final year of eligibility, is involved in numerous activities on and off campus.
Howells is Northwestern's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee football representative, playing an integral part in SAAC programming and community service efforts, which includes the holiday food drive, holiday book drive and speaking with local schools and youth organizations. He is also a regular volunteer for the American Cancer Society Generation Fit program and he assists with the YMCA Spring Break programming. In addition, Howells is a mentor for an at-risk male student for the Junior Wildkit Mentoring Program in Evanston.
"Joel is a tremendous individual who is always there to lend a hand and give back to the community," said NU head coach Pat Fitzgerald. "He is certainly deserving of this honor."
"It never ceases to amaze me to see the contributions student-athletes make to their communities," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "Often times, these young men are better known for the good things they do on the field. The AFCA is proud to recognize these student-athletes for the good things they do in their communities."
