EVANSTON, Ill. -- After a split in their first two games of the 2006 season, the Northwestern Wildcats welcome two opponents from the Big 12 this weekend as part of the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge, hosting the Missouri Tigers on Friday and the Iowa State Cyclones on Sunday.
In both games last weekend, the 'Cats were led by junior midfielder Shannon Schneeman (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham School). She notched a goal in each contest and both were on shots from outside the box. Against DePaul on Friday, Schneeman took all of Northwestern's 16 corner kicks. She is back for 2006 after missing all of 2005 due to injury.
The 'Cats had other contributions on the offensive end. Junior Kelsey Hans (Lakeville, Minn./Lakeville), Northwestern's leading scorer the past two seasons, tallied a goal against DePaul and registered four shots on goal against Kentucky.
Scouting the Tigers Missouri is 2-0 after knocking off two Big Ten opponents last weekend, defeating Iowa 2-0 and routing No. 13 Illinois 5-0. Sophomore Ashley Hamblin and freshman Breanna Thornton had two goals apiece in the upset over the Illini. Hamblin has three goals on the season.
Scouting the Cyclones Iowa State is 0-2 on the year. They fell 9-0 to No. 5 Notre Dame in their season opener and lost on Monday to in-state rival Drake 4-2. The Cyclones made their first NCAA Tournament appearance last season.
