EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's men's golf team is set to compete in the 109th edition of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships, which are being held Wednesday through Saturday, May 31-June 3, in Sunriver, Ore. The University of Portland is the host institution.
The 17th-seeded Wildcats secured a spot in the 30-team tournament with a second-place showing at the Central Regional, their best regional finish since the 1998-99 team finished second in the Central Regional.
NU, the Big Ten champion, is making its 22nd all-time NCAA National Championships appearance. The 'Cats finished a program-best second in 1939 and '45 and has two third-place finishes as well.
The 'Cats are making their fifth trip to the NCAA National Championships under Goss. NU made four consecutive trips from 1997 to 2000, placing seventh, 19th, third and fourth, respectively.
NU jumped over 10 spots higher in the two main computer rankings following its regional performance. Ranked No. 26 prior to the regional according to Golfstat, the 'Cats cracked the top 10 this week as they come in at No. 9. NU rose 11 spots in the Golfweek/Sagarin index, from No. 28 to No. 17.
Georgia is the defending national champion, and Georgia Tech was the runner-up a year ago. Washington senior James Lepp returns to defend his individual title.
