Northwestern Sweeps DePaul, 3-1

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Freshman Tammy Williams (El Dorado Springs, Mo./Osceola) scored her 53rd run of the season to tie Northwestern's single-season record and the No. 14 Wildcats bested DePaul, 3-1, to sweep a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium.
With the win, Northwestern moves to 38-11 on the season, while DePaul falls to 27-21 with the loss.
Northwestern got on the board first in the third inning. Senior Ashley Crane (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake) led off the frame with a soft grounder to third, and the throw to first pulled the fielder off the bag allowing Crane to reach. Junior Katie Logan (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol) executed a perfect sacrifice bunt, and an alert Crane made it all the way to third on the play.
Williams then sent her second single of the game up the middle to drive in Crane for a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats added another run in the top of the fourth. Senior Sheila McCorkle (Costa Mesa, Calif./Mater Dei) reached first on an error by the first baseman to lead off the frame, then moved up a bag on a sacrifice by freshman Erin Dyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport).
With junior Jessica Miller (Elberfeld, Ind./Techumseh) at the plate, McCorkle executed a perfect delayed steal to reach third. One out later, Crane singled to left to drive McCorkle in and push the NU lead to two, 2-0.
In the fifth, the Wildcats again scratched out a run. Williams led off with her third single of the game, then moved to second when Garland Cooper (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) singled through the left side. Senior Jamie Dotson (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) advanced both runners with a groundout to the right side.
With one out, senior Kristen Amegin (West Sacramento, Calif./Elk Grove) hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Williams for a 3-0 lead. The run was the 53rd of the season for Williams, tying All-American Stephanie Churchwell's single-season school record set last year. Williams entered the game ranked fifth in the nation in runs scored.
DePaul replaced starter Tracie Adix in the circle with Leslie Scott to start the sixth.
Senior Courtnay Foster (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro) picked up the win to move to 19-6 on the season. She allowed one run on three hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Williams finished the game 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. Crane was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI for the 'Cats.
Northwestern returns to action at 6 p.m. CT Saturday at Illinois to begin its final Big Ten series of the season. The Wildcats need one win in the two-game set to clinch the conference title.
